100 Years of Forestry

In 2025, we are celebrating the first forester hired at Virginia Tech, J. Wilbur O’Byrne in 1925, marking 100 years of forestry education, research, and outreach.
Connect with Nature and Share Your Experiences
During the month-long virtual celebration, enjoy forestry where you are and share your time with nature on our Kudoboard or tag us on social media using #VTForestry100:
- Plant a tree
- Post your favorite forest picture
- Go on a nature walk
- Take a hike
- Host a forest tour
- Forest Restoration – perform an activity in your area to improve local environments
- Tree identification – identify trees in your local area and share your observations

The virtual celebration is all about connecting with the natural world - together.

By registering for $30, you will receive:
- Your choice of a limited-edition ‘47 brand baseball cap or a limited-edition gray t-shirt
- A 100 Years of Forestry decal
Quantities are limited. A portion of your registration for this virtual event ($5) will support the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation Annual Fund. This fund enables the department to support students, faculty and staff throughout the year with various programs that would not be possible without generous philanthropic donors
