Undergraduate Student

Katherine Olson

Majors: Environmental Science + Biochemistry

Expected Graduation Date: May 2018

  • Minor: Watershed Management

I am a student ambassador for the Office of Undergraduate Research and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. I am also involved in two research groups, a wastewater treatment lab and a streamwater quality monitoring lab. My research experience between these labs and three others I have worked with in the past includes all kind of crazy projects, from building miniature activated-sludge wastewater treatment systems and traveling to various cities presenting at entrepreneurship competitions, to getting very up-close and personal with bats and using interactive models to teach elementary schoolers about watersheds. Thanks to the literal immersion environment provided by the aforementioned wastewater group, I only needed a year and a half to turn my soggy background knowledge in Mandarin Chinese (IE, "xiexie" and "ni hao") into a central part of my life and my second language; one that I can use to prepare a resume, interview for an internship, discuss my lab work, and with the help of a scholarship that I recently received, go on to one of China's best environmental schools to pursue a master's degree in Environmental Engineering. I am very excited for what the coming years bring, both here at VT and after graduation, and I look forward to a future that can combine the two things I love most, Chinese and environmental science, into a career!
