Undergraduate Student

Dan Murphy

Major: Materials Science and Engineering

Expected Graduation Date: May 2018

  • Minor: Green Engineering

My name is Dan Murphy, and I am a senior at Virginia Tech studying Material Science and Engineering with a minor in Green Engineering. I originally came to Virginia from New York to pursue ideas of developing energy technologies for an increasingly demanding world. I ended up in Material Science and Engineering and thought I had to change my course. I have worked in polymer labs trying to mimic spider silk, glass labs drawing optical fibers, and presided over the program’s professional society (as I am currently). This year however, I started my career in Green Engineering and have come full circle. I hope to use this opportunity to further my career supporting such technologies as the windmills I grew up watching in upstate New York. Outside of classes, I have played for the school rugby team for 3 years, became certified in SCUBA diving, practiced with the MMA club, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery Blacksburg has to offer. Aspiring to be the proud owner of a dog as well as a new engineering diploma by the summer of 2018.
