Undergraduate Student

Shannon McShea

Major: Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise - Dietetics Option

Graduating in: May 2018

  • Minor: Psychology

My name is Shannon McShea, and I am a Junior studying Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise, with a concentration in Dietetics and a minor in Psychology. My biggest passion and motivation in life is my commitment to service. I have been involved in many different organizations and held numerous jobs, but I have found that I am the happiest when I am offering my time for the good of others. My involvement with Gamma Beta Phi, an honor and service organization here at Virginia Tech, has given me the opportunity to pursue my passion for service in many different ways. After I graduate, I hope to work in the healthcare field in a capacity that allows me to continue serving others in a unique way. My ultimate goal is to educate and help those in need so that we may all live in a world where we are not losing loved ones to obesity, heart disease, and other curable diseases that result from poor yet reversible diet and lifestyle choices.

Currently, as a student studying nutrition, I learn a lot about food, but not so much about what happens to all of that food. During my recent study abroad experience in Rome, everything that I have been learning was put into perspective, and I learned a lot about sustainability in a global context and the lasting impacts that it can have. Since then, I have made it a goal of mine to make our world a better place through reducing food waste and promoting other sustainable practices within the foodservice industry. I think I can achieve this by combining my passion for food and health with my desire to make a difference on our world and the lives of others.
