Undergraduate Student

Stephen Hong

Major: Materials Science and Engineering

Expected Graduation Date: May 2016

  • Minor: Green Engineering

Stephen is majoring in Materials Science and Engineering, minoring in Green Engineering, and is graduating at the conclusion of the spring 2016 semester. He’s enjoyed his time at Virginia Tech tremendously, and hopes to develop a career that expands the use of renewable energy production technologies and sustainable material sourcing.  In his senior year, Stephen is demonstrating skills he’s accrued during his tenure at Virginia Tech through his green engineering focused senior capstone project by applying polymer hydrogels to conserve water over the lifetime of golf course putting greens. In his spare time, Stephen enjoys hiking, skiing, ice hockey, cooking, reading about political and environmental issues, and learning about sustainably minded technologies. Stephen hopes to make advances toward sustainability goals in the agriculture and energy sectors to improve the quality of life for American and global citizens alike. In the next decade, he hopes to spend his time working and traveling in an effort to enrich his own life and those of others. Stephen’s favorite quote is by Margaret Mead, who said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”
