Julie Chang

Major: Environmental Science with concentration in Water, Land, and Air

Graduating in: Spring 2016

I am pursuing a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science (sub-option: Land, Water, and Air), planning to graduate in May 2016. Becoming an environmental consultant is my career goal because I wish to help people make decisions that will lead to a better balance between the needs of the economy, environment, and society. This passion was initiated by one of my first work experiences, which involved heading an invasive species management team for a recreation center. While studying invasive plant species behavior and our management strategies, I realized that this environmental problem was connected to other kinds of issues such as public interest and low budgets.

At Virginia Tech’s plant ecology lab, I have been assisting Dr. Jacob Barney's research on habitat specialization for invasive species. Although I have partaken a minor role compared to the graduate students and post-docs in his lab, Barney has made sure to help me understand the finer details of the research and inspired me to ask questions to my peers.
