Junior, Geography

  • Minor: Geosciences

Growing up, my family took trips every summer to various places around the United States, and we always went by car. Traveling across the country (and sometimes to Virginia Tech football games) in the backseat of a Subaru station wagon was one of my best childhood memories. Seeing the country from this vantage point really changed how I view the world. Hiking, camping, and canoeing in places like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, and the Adirondack Mountains were amazing experiences, but the car rides there were always one of my favorite parts because of the up-close windshield view I had of changing landscapes and land use. These experiences traveling with my family ignited my interest

in the natural world and revealed to me how incredible the Earth is. As a result of these yearly trips, I knew I wanted to have a career in the field of natural resources. My travels have made me appreciate the community and the environment I live in, and coming to Virginia Tech has only fueled my passion for the world and its wealth of resources.

I play mellophone in the Marching Virginians and absolutely love being a part of “The Spirit of Tech”! I love embracing the Hokie spirit and living out Ut Prosim [That I May Serve] every day. I am also a College of Natural Resources and Environment ambassador and am involved in the Virginia Tech Symphony Band, the Geography Society at Virginia Tech, and Relay for Life.

Those long car rides have taught me to appreciate the beautiful landscapes of the world and have inspired me toward a career to preserve them for the enjoyment and health of future generations. I hope to continue my interest in the world’s natural resources after graduation by working with the climate change and sustainability movements and eventually teaching earth science or geography. I look forward to continuing to share my Hokie spirit and my curiosity about the world that all started by growing up in a family of Hokies and driving all over our country, looking out the window!
