Adelina (Addie) Jones

Senior, Geography

Geospatial and Environmental Analysis

I was born and raised outside Richmond, Va., in the suburb of Short Pump. I grew up spending time with my family on the Chesapeake Bay and Mattaponi River. I love exploring the outdoors, being on the water, and enjoying nature. I enjoy sailing, hiking, canoeing, and kayaking. Also, I absolutely love being a Hokie. I chose Virginia Tech because I fell in love with the mountains, the Hokie spirit, and the College of Natural Resources and Environment’s Department of Geography. Learning about people, places, and culture while studying maps and geographic information systems (GIS) interests me, and I realized I wanted to pursue this as a career. While at Virginia Tech, I have enjoyed getting involved in campus activities such as Relay for Life, The Big Event, and Pi Beta Phi sorority.

My interest in education, geography, and volunteering led me to study abroad in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, during the spring 2011 semester. This was a great opportunity to study an array of subjects while learning and experiencing life in a third world country. I taught twice weekly at a local public school and worked with students at the Punta Cana International School to plan the Ecology Club’s first Trash Olympics. I also worked with Project Esperanza, a nonprofit organization, volunteering for a week at a grassroots school for Haitian immigrant children in Puerto Plata. Teaching and working with children in a classroom setting was a rewarding experience, which made my semester abroad very memorable.

I am still undecided about my exact career path when I graduate. One option is to obtain a job using my GIS skills. Another possibility is to pursue a career in education, either working for a nonprofit education organization or attending graduate school to receive a master’s degree in secondary education. I am really looking forward to being a member of the Leadership Institute to develop my leadership skills and explore job opportunities in geography.
