Undergraduate Student

Lydia Eggleston

Junior, Geography

  • Minors: Geology, Spanish

I grew up in Danville, Va., with my younger sister, older brother, and two older stepsisters. Most of my family is musical, so I began to learn to play the violin when I was 7 years old. I have been playing for over 13 years now, and I am a violinist in the New River Valley Symphony here in Blacksburg. Before college, I was a member of the Danville Symphony with my sister and father. In addition to music, I enjoy learning about paleontology and how the earth has changed over time as well as continuing earth processes, so I am pursuing a geology minor during my time here. I am also an active member of the Geology Club. I love improving my Spanish language abilities. By the time I graduate I hope to be completely fluent in the language in addition to completing a Spanish minor. Not only is it fun to learn a second language, I also think it is important to be bilingual in our multicultural society.

I am currently in my third year as a Hokie and am very happy with my classes and my major. But during my freshman year here at Virginia Tech, I was undecided about what to choose as my major because I wanted to do everything. How could I possibly select one major from so many amazing options? By taking a variety of classes that sounded interesting to me, I found out that I love cultural diversity and learning about life in other countries. I also really enjoy learning about the ways people all around the world interact with the environment and affect it on a local and global scale. These interests converged and led me to fall in love with the geography major in the College of Natural Resources and Environment. My goal is to attend graduate school once I earn my undergraduate degree. After I complete my education, I am excited to find the perfect job that will bring all of my interests together.
