Matt Hepler (’05) joins Appalachian Voices

May 15, 2017 – Matt Hepler (’05 B.A. geography) has joined the environmental nonprofit Appalachian Voices as the central Appalachian water scientist. His degree included a concentration in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and environmental resources.

Hepler worked in the GIS field for five years and then spent two years in the master’s program at Appalachian State University, focusing on hydrology. He returned to Virginia to work for the Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards in Wise County, leading the group’s water program and helping develop litigation strategies against coal companies. He joined Appalachian Voices in 2017, based in the Norton, Virginia, office. Hepler is a hiker and square dance caller, and loves spending time on the rivers of Central Appalachia.
