In memoriam: Peter Beckjord (’79)

May 15, 2015 – Peter Rains Beckjord (’79 Ph.D. forestry) of Highland, Maryland, died on July 14, 2014, at the age of 69.

Beckjord served in the U.S. Army for three years. After earning his doctorate at Virginia Tech, he worked for Weyerhaeuser and then joined the faculty of the University of Maryland as professor of forest science. As founder of the one-man National Paulownia Center in Beltsville, he spent over a decade performing research to promote paulownia trees as a cash crop and a solution to global reforestation problems.

He is survived by his four children: Lauren, Caitlin, Ryan, and Craig.
