In memoriam: Michael Mason (’77)


Nov. 15, 2014 – Michael Joseph Mason (’77 B.S. fisheries science) passed away on Feb. 24, 2014, in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 59.

Mason, who started his career with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, was hired by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in 1981 to manage the Rathbun Fish Hatchery, a facility for channel catfish, walleye, and largemouth bass. In 1998, he was promoted to supervisor of the statewide Fish Culture Section based in Des Moines. He supervised 22 culturists at three coldwater hatcheries and three warmwater/coolwater hatcheries. He also served as assistant chief of the Fisheries Bureau.

Mason received the Award of Excellence from the Fish Culture Section of the American Fisheries Society in 2013 for his lifetime achievement of improving fishing and fishing opportunities in Iowa and Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Naquin Mason, and daughter, Suzana Kate Mason.
