Nov. 15, 2014 – 1st Lt. Tracy Porter (’10 B.A. geography), U.S. Army, was one of four recent Corps of Cadets graduates invited to speak at the 21st Gunfighter Panel on April 10, 2014. The panel members shared their combat deployment experiences, lessons learned, and leadership challenges, as well as how the corps experience prepared them for life after college.

The Corps of Cadets started the Gunfighter Panel series in 2004, shortly after the United States entered combat in Iraq. With the war came the increased potential for cadets to be in combat shortly after graduation, and this series evolved to help prepare them for their future in an uncertain world. Each semester's panel allows the corps to teach future leaders and to honor those who are already serving the nation in harm’s way.

Porter, who in addition to his geography degree completed minors in leadership studies and geosciences, is stationed at Fort Stewart, Ga., with the 766th Ordnance Company. He was a member of the Highty-Tighties and served as the regimental operations officer his senior year. Porter was recognized as a Hokie Hero in fall 2013 during his nine-month deployment to Forward Operating Base Pasab Kandahar, Afghanistan.
