From his minesweeping days in the Pacific during the war, to teaching and doing his Masters in Montana, to building railroads (and derailing trains) in Tennessee, to completing his PhD in Michigan, to heading up the new Harvest Research Project in 1968, before starting the IFO (Industrial Forestry Operations) program at Virginia Tech in 1973 - Doc has been there and done a lot! Even as he enters his 87th year, Doc remains a very active person at Virginia Tech, helping with undergraduate classes and imparting his wisdom and humor on new graduate students. It is hard to find a better liked person.

Doc

One of Docs old students tells it best when he said "If you dropped Doc into the depths of some southeastern swamp forest, and he finally crawled out to a county road and waved down the first passing car - the driver would open the door and say "Hey Doc, I haven't seen you for ages!"

A scholarship fund for Tom Walbridge, Jr. was completed in 2005. One deserving IFO student each year would then be a recipient of $1,000 to help him or her with their studies. Those of you who have donated, we thank you for your generousity.
