Joel Campbell

  • Principal and Owner, GIS Enterprise Consulting

Joel Campbell has more than 20 years of experience in all aspects of business development and executive management in the geospatial industry. He is currently the Principal and Owner of GIS Enterprise Consulting, focused on helping businesses in the Geospatial Industry. Most recently Joel served as the President of ERDAS, Inc. in Atlanta, GA., a global provider of remote sensing software. Prior to joining ERDAS, Joel served in the position of Senior Director of Product Management at GeoEye in Dulles, VA. There he was responsible for product innovation, management, pricing, positioning and marketing. Immediately prior to GeoEye he served as Vice President and General Manger of Definiens, Inc.

Other relevant positions include operating his own consulting firm focused on business development and sales training for companies in the Geospatial industry; serving as the Senior Vice President of Corporate Sales for EarthData International, a national Aerial Photography and Remote Sensing company.

Mr. Campbell began his commercial career in the geospatial industry with ESRI where he ultimately was the Director of US Sales and Manager of the Washington DC regional office of ESRI. Under his leadership the ESRI Sales Division grew to more than 400 employees with an annual revenue goal in excess of 300 million USD.

Joel studied broadcast communications at the University of Maryland and spent 10 years in various positions in the commercial television industry before beginning his career in GIS and information technology.

Joel has been a feature speaker, lecturer and trainer for many GIS organizations around the world. Additionally he has published articles on various geospatial trends and opportunities as well as recently co-authoring a chapter in the Manual of Geospatial Science and Technology. Joel also serves on an outside advisory board for the Virginia Tech Center for Geospatial Information Technology, (CGIT).

Joel currently lives in Northern Virginia and is married with two grown children. His son received his undergraduate degree at Clemson University and subsequently earned his J.D. from Law School at William and Mary and is currently employed in the Clemson University Athletic Department. Joel's daughter recently graduated from the College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech with a bachelor's degree in geography and is employed as a GIS Specialist with a firm in Richmond, Virginia.
